"Evangelions"
are humaniod fighting machines. They are designed to neutralize and destroy
"Angels". Their designs are similar to those of Angels.
EVAs can create "Absolute Terror Field" just like Angels do. This
field makes them invulnerable to conventional man-made weapons, except
for close-combat weapons providing that the Angel's AT Field has
been breached.
These
humanoid fighting machines (EVAs) are short-lived in battle due to the
enormous amount of power they consume. To overcome this situation, normally
they're connected to a long power cable, called Umbilical Cable, that runs throughout the city.
However, if in any circumstances the EVA unit is disconnected from the
power cable, the internal power supply will be activated. But it can only
satisfy the EVA's power needs for approximately 5 minutes and 2 seconds.
Despite their robot looks, EVAs are actually living tissues covered by armour pieces. They are controlled psychically using the pilots' mental powers. They're inserted into the EVA using an Entry Plug. These pilots are 14-year-olds with certain family background, which the scientists say that those children can have high synchronization rate while controlling EVAs. What background are they referring to ?
As technology advances, EVAs can also be controlled without a 14-year old pilot. This is done by using a "Dummy Plug". These dummy plugs act merciless towards the enemy, that's why they're only used during emergencies.
